Illinois Enforces Fueling Assistance Law

[bs_lead]According to the Illinois Motor Fuel Sales Public Act (P.A. 97-1152), as of January 1, 2014 gasoline dispensing facilities in Illinois must:[/bs_lead]

"provide and display at least one ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] compliant motor fuel dispenser with a direct telephone number to the station that allows a disabled operator of a motor vehicle to to request refueling assistance, with the telephone number posted in close proximity to the International Symbol of Accessibility...if the station does not have at least one ADA compliant motor fuel dispenser, the station must display on at least one motor fuel dispenser a direct telephone number to the station that allows a disabled operator of a motor vehicle to request refueling assistance."

Basically, all gasoline dispensing facilities in Illinois must provide an ADA-compliant dispenser and/or clearly visible signage with the facility's telephone number so customers with disabilities can call to request fueling assistance.  Fueling assistance must be provided upon request and without any charge beyond the self-serve price.However, according to Doug Rathbun, Bureau Chief of Illinois Weights and Measures, inspectors are still finding many facilities not in compliance with this requirement.  PASS wants to help spread the word to owners/operators in Illinois about complying with this requirement.  And, if you do not have the appropriate signage at your facility, PASS can help with that, too!Order Your Fueling Assistance Sticker →
