Prioritizing Safety at the Pump

This summer, Oregon lawmakers voted to transition from gas station attendant-pumped gas to self-service gas dispensers.  Oregonians have been largely banned from pumping their own gas for almost 72 years!  The move from attendant-pumped gas to self-service refueling presents safety concerns for station owners/operators and customers. While this change offers newfound convenience to customers, it's crucial to focus on safety while adapting to self-service fueling. At PASS, we prioritize safety and thought this would be an excellent opportunity to revisit fueling safety procedures.

Consumer Education and Training
Station owners/operators should provide clear and concise instructions on how to operate self-service fuel dispensers. Implementing user-friendly systems and prominently displaying step-by-step guidelines can help customers, particularly those unfamiliar with the fueling process, to refuel their vehicles safely.

Emergency Shut-off Procedures
Accidents happen! It's mandatory to have easily accessible emergency shut-off mechanisms at every gas station facility. In case of an unexpected fuel spill or fire, the designated Class A/B and Class C underground storage tank (UST) operators should know how to quickly and safely halt the fueling process and respond to emergencies.

Fire Safety Precautions
Gasoline is highly flammable, and fire safety is of utmost importance. Gas stations should have visible and well-maintained fire extinguishers placed strategically throughout the refueling area. Additionally, providing prominently displayed guidelines about the potential hazards of smoking, using electronic devices, or leaving engines running during the refueling process can significantly reduce fire risks.  It is also mandatory that the designated Class C operator is aware of any refueling hazards that are present at the facility.

Payment Security
With the rise of digital transactions, gas stations must prioritize payment security. Implementing secure card readers and educating customers about common scams or fraudulent activities associated with self-service transactions can safeguard customers' financial information.

As gas stations in Oregon transition from attendant-pumped gas to self-service refueling, let it be a reminder that a proactive approach prioritizing customer education, implementing emergency procedures, and committing to refueling safety protocols is a significant stride towards providing a safe refueling experience. By placing safety at the forefront, gas station facilities not only lessen the likelihood of accidents but also play a pivotal role in safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.
