Obtaining Insurance For Aging USTs

By Holly Westerfield

It can be difficult to find insurance coverage for USTs that are 30 years or older. However, maintaining this coverage is essential to safe operation. The EPA spoke with several insurance providers about the industry and what they look at when writing insurance policies for these UST systems. These insurance providers generally agreed that there are some actions you can take to increase your likelihood of obtaining coverage, such as demonstrating compliance with thorough inspection and system maintenance records.

To help owners/operators with this difficulty, the EPA has compiled a list of resources to help owners and operators as they consider options for obtaining or keeping insurance to satisfy the financial responsibility requirement.

The following resources from EPA and the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) can help you assess options when obtaining UST insurance.

  • ASTSWMO's Guide to Tank Insurance at https://astswmo.org/guide-to-tank-insurance/ provides information on tank insurance, including definitions and resources, regulatory requirements, types of insurance, reporting requirements, and questions to ask when purchasing tank insurance.
