Muncie, IN – Holly has been with PASS for two and a half years now. She started out as an assistant curriculum writer but advanced to the head of the education department after a few months. As the education specialist and curriculum writer, she is in charge of the development of new and updated training courses, keeping track of the regulatory differences between states, and maintaining the communication between state regulators and PASS. Holly graduated from Ball State University in 2019 with a degree in magazine journalism and a minor in history.

This week we spoke with Holly about her role at PASS and her hobbies outside of work.

What do you do?

I read state and federal regulations and use what I learn to write UST Operator training. I submit these trainings to state regulatory bodies for approval and make any edits they request. I also keep track of our state approvals, the regulatory differences between the states, and I keep track of what states are updating their regulations.

In addition, I am also responsible for creating the newsletter every month, writing blog posts, communicating with regulators, and creating graphics that are used throughout the trainings, in the newsletter, on the website, and in promotional materials.

How did you find this job?

I actually stumbled across this position by chance. I was in town to dog sit for some friends for a few days when I happened to stumble across the job posting. I decided to interview here on a whim, I got the job, and started working in the office the next week. My family likes to joke that I accidentally moved to Muncie.

Why did you choose this job?

I chose this job because it allows me to combine my passion for the environment with my love of learning to make a tangible difference in the world. I take pride in knowing the trainings I develop actively help operators protect the health of their communities and reduce the number of accidents that harm the environment.

What do you like most about your job?

I love learning everything I can about a topic and then sharing what I learned with others. this job allows me to combine that love of learning with my passion for the environment to make a product that actively helps my community and communities like it across the country.

What’s something you wished our customers knew?

I read all the state UST regulations before I develop a new course. That means I have read more than 17 states’ UST regulations in their entirety. I’m just now realizing that is a third of all 50 states. That also means I’ve read well over 3,000 pages of regulations, which is equivalent to reading two and a half copies of War and Peace.

What’s the most used thing in your office?

After my computer the most used thing in my office is my cup of dry erase markers. I have multiple dry erase boards that I use to keep track of state approvals and requirements, and I’m constantly updating them.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

I spend a lot of time outside of work helping at my friend’s shop and volunteering in my community. I usually spend the rest of my time hanging out with my friends and family.

What TV shows are you watching right now?

I’ve been watching Stargate SG-1 recently. But I also listen to a lot of podcasts while I drive.
