Class A and Class B operators are certified after taking and completing the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC’s) exam, which is offered online or in-person (in-person exams are conducted at DEC offices and are timed and proctored). The DEC has also put together a training guide for Class A and Class B operators called Tank IQ, which can be accessed through the DEC’s website. A and B operators should study Tank IQ and review the UST Operator Exam Tutorial prior to taking the online exam. Those wishing to take the exam in person should send a request by mail to

Class A/B operators who are certified in another state whose operator training program has been reviewed by the EPA and is listed on the EPA’s website may apply for reciprocity through the DEC’s online exam website. These states are:
